Mattie Washburn Elementary School

The Windsor Unified School District asked AXIA to design 17 additional classrooms at the Mattie Washburn Elementary School on an unused portion of the existing campus. The classrooms would sit adjacent to the existing multi-use and anchor a couple of existing circulation walkways on the campus. Windsor Unified School District wanted to utilize modular classrooms and bid the project to numerous manufacturers to create the greatest economic efficiencies.  We utilized the general modular classroom footprints and designed them in clusters of classrooms utilizing common walls for cost savings. We rotated the buildings 40 degrees and staggered them to reduce the length of walkway between buildings and to create functional attractive outdoor gathering spaces. These outdoor gathering spaces will also serve as outdoor classrooms with seating walls and shade.
